Don't Mess with Chimeras

(May 4, 2080 - Posted May 18, 2080)

The fun continues. I came face-to-face with an actual chimera recently. Now before you all start sending me irate messages that the term chimera is generic and misleading, I agree with you, but bear with me.

Chimera (from the dictionary):

Any mythical animal with parts taken from various animals.

I think we can all agree to do away with the “mythical” misnomer. (Really, it’s about time someone updates the dictionary for this century!) I’ve caught glimpses of other chimera before, including an infestation of winged rats. I even rescued a basilisk once. (See the post on Clarence and his ongoing health battles.)

My dictionary includes another definition:

A fire-breathing female monster with a lion's head, a goat's body, and a serpent's tail.

Apparently, these are kept as pets in the Olympus ward down south. Those crazy Greeks! But this description is more in line with the creature I encountered, though I can’t guarantee it was female.

A few other details were different. It had goat legs, but a long scaled body, and horns like a gazelle. The lion’s head didn’t breathe fire. That came from the snake head on the end of its tail and it was more like spitting napalm than exhaling fire like dragons do.

Unfortunately, my first (and hopefully last) encounter with the chimera was not a happy one. Blood was spilled. That’s all I’ll say on the matter so I don’t get the trophy hunters who troll this site all excited.

I’d love to hear of your encounters with any kind of chimera. Leave your stories in the comments.

Did you at least bring back the horns? They’d look great mounted on my wall. So would you ;)

You are doing gods work, ridding the world of such filth. Bless you!

I've come across a chimera. Not like the one you describe. It was a bunny-antelope mix, I think. Strangest looking thing I ever saw. But it made a nice stew :)
